Ambassador Edward J.
Perkins has been
appointed by Gov. Brad
Henry as Honorary UN
Day Chair for Oklahoma.

as the William J. Crowe
Chair and the Executive
Director of the Inter-
national Programs
Center at the University
of Oklahoma since 1996.

U.S. Ambassador to the
United Nations and U.S.
Representative in the UN

Dr. Edward J. Perkins
In the spring of 1945, representatives
of 50 nations gathered in San Francisco
to put the final touches on a document of
far-reaching consequences – the Charter
of the United Nations. Enthusiastically
supported by the United States, the UN
Charter went into effect on October 24,
1945. Two years later, the UN General
Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored
resolution declaring October 24 as United
Nations Day. Since that time, this
important event has been celebrated by
nations large and small and by
communities around the world.
All Oklahomans are encouraged to
commemorate the 60th anniversary of the
United Nations by sharing information and
by promoting its cherished values.
October 24, 2005
Governor Brad Henry has proclaimed that October 24th will be recognized as "UN Day" in the State of Oklahoma. To read the proclamation, Click Here.

UN member states (189
at the time) pledged to
focus national and
international agendas
on eight goals that seek
to improve global
development levels by
2015. The Millennium
Development Goals
(MDG’s) provide a road
map to all nations and
the UN system for
bettering the standard of
living and human
development for each
citizen of the world. At
their core is the
promotion of children’s
health and well-being.
