NEWS RELEASE:
Oklahoma to Observe United Nations Day

Local residents will have the opportunity of expressing their support for the United
Nations and U.S. participation in the United Nations when the Greater Oklahoma
City Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA holds its fall general meeting
and luncheon at Noon on October 22 at Oklahoma City University’s Student Faculty
Center.

2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The theme
for this year’s event is “The Health and Survival of All Children.”

In the tradition of previous Oklahoma governors, Governor Brad Henry has issued a
Proclamation proclaiming Oct. 24 as United Nations Day in Oklahoma.  The
Proclamation recognizes the importance of the United Nations and U.S. participation
in its mandate to achieving international cooperation in solving problems of an
economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character.

Governor Henry has appointed former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dr.
Edward J. Perkins Honorary United Nations Day Chair for Oklahoma.  Following a
distinguished career with the Department of State, since 1996 Dr. Perkins has served
as the William J. Crowe Chair and the Executive Director of the International
Programs Center at the University of Oklahoma.

Additional speakers at the October 22 UNA-OKC luncheon include Lois L.
Salmeron, Ed.D., RN, Assistant Dean and Professor at Oklahoma City University’s
Kramer School of Nursing, S. Njeri Mbugua, a native of Kenya who is a University
of Central Oklahoma senior and plans to do humanitarian work related to children’s
and women’s health in developing nations, and Amy Chlouber, M.S. LPT, Program
Director of the Therapeutic Child Care Center at Sunbeam Family Services in
Oklahoma City, who is an early childhood mental health specialist.

The United Nations Association of the U.S.A. is the nation’s largest grassroots
foreign policy organization and the leading center of policy research on the U.N. and
global issues.  There are community-based UNA-USA chapters throughout the
country.
