Oklahoma Celebrates UN Day 2005
UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF EASTERN OKLAHOMA

ANNUAL UNITED NATIONS DAY DINNER

GILLIAN SORENSEN
The United Nations and the United States : Controversy and Opportunity

The United Nations Association of Eastern Oklahoma Annual Dinner will be held at the Oaks Country Club on
Tuesday, October 18, 2005. This is a very special occasion, for it is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the
United Nations.  In celebration of this anniversary the United Nations Association of Eastern Oklahoma is both
delighted and fortunate to have as the dinner program speaker Gillian Sorensen.  Ms. Sorensen is the Senior
Advisor of the United Nations Foundation which promotes a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world through
support of the United Nations and its Charter. Since its inception, the United Nations Foundation has spent more
than 500 million dollars and funded 389 projects. The average size of a project has been over one million
dollars. Currently the United Nations Foundation is working on a large project to eradicate polio. A scheduled
project will work to eradicate measles.

From 1997 to 2003 Ms. Sorensen served as Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations on appointment
by Secretary-General Kofi Annan. From 1993 to 1996 she served as Special Adviser for Public Policy to
Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Her topic will be The United Nations and the United States : Controversy and Opportunity.
.
The United Nations Association of Eastern Oklahoma invites you to help in supporting the Model UN programs
that are held each year at the University of Tulsa, Oral Roberts University and Booker T. Washington High

and about important global issues. The United Nations Association is combining the Annual Dinner with a major
fundraising effort to support the Model UN programs. We hope you will attend the dinner and when you make
