Oklahoma City's area-wide Celebration of the International Day of Peace!
|
Multi-cultural dancers, a children's choir, "Pinwheels for Peace," & more. Wednesday, Sept. 21st, 5 to 7pm, at Oklahoma City University.
|
The International Day of Peace, September 21st, is
rapidly becoming one of the annual time markers that
we use to celebrate our emerging global culture of
peace. This year, millions of people in thousands of
places around the world will observe Peace Day.
It will be a day of parades,
concerts, vigils, speeches, and
programs of various kinds. The
celebrations will be large and
small, simple and sophisticated.
In establishing the International
Day of Peace, the United Nations
General Assembly decided that it
would be appropriate:
"...to devote a specific time to concentrate the
efforts of the United Nations and its Member
States, as well as of the whole of mankind, to
promoting the ideals of peace and to giving
positive evidence of their commitment to peace in
all viable ways… (The International Day of Peace)
should be devoted to commemorating and
strengthening the ideals of peace both within
and among all nations and peoples."
Across Oklahoma, we anticipate that the
International Day of Peace will be a time
for pinwheels, peace cranes, and other
activities appropriate to the occasion.

Wednesday, September 21st
Oklahoma City University
2501 N. Blackwelder Ave., OKC
Oklahoma City – Students and other community
members throughout the greater OKC area will
participate in the 5th Annual International Day of
Peace Pinwheels for Peace Festival. The Festival is
being held September 21 at McDaniel University
Center, Oklahoma City University. It starts with a
Drum Circle at 4:30pm. The
Festival begins at 5pm. As in
previous years, we'll enjoy the
pinwheel creations of students
from the Oklahoma City metro
area, live music, multicultural
performances, activity booths,
and fun.
Students around the metro area
are creating pinwheels
representing peace and harmony as part of the
Pinwheels for Peace Project. The idea of two Florida
art teachers in 2005, the project has become an
international celebration as well as a way for art
students to show their contribution to the United
Nations’ International Day of Peace. Some of their
works of art will be on display during the festival.
As students create pinwheels, they are asked to reflect
on Peace: A state of calm and tranquility, with no
anxiety or violence.
Performances at the Celebration: Musician and Artist
Steve McLinn of Ojas Music will lead us in a
multicultural celebration of dance
and music. Kicking off the event at
4:30 will be a drum circle. You are
invited to bring a drum and join the
fun! The festival will feature St.
Andrew’s Dung Lac Lion Dance
Team; Little Dove Peace Dancers;
the Mayan School of Dance; Dove
Science Academy Folkloric
Dancers; Linwood Elementary
Honor Choir; Dancers from Capitol
Hill High School; American Indian
Dancers; and a Peace Mob where
everyone can join the fun!
Display and Activity Tables will
provide information from our
sponsor groups about peace -
promoting peace within ourselves,
among groups and with our environment. You will
also be able to create your own pinwheel of peace.
In today’s world, peace needs to
become more than just a word.
Students are bombarded with television
images, video games, and magazine
and newspaper articles that promote
conflict and war. Through the
Pinwheels for Peace Festival, we help
the students make a public visual
statement about their feelings about war and peace,
tolerance and cooperation, harmony and unity. It will
awaken our community to what the next generation is
thinking....
