"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?
In small places, close to home -- so close and so small
that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world.  Yet
they are the world of the individual person; the
neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he
attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such
are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks
equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without
discrimination….  Without concerted citizen action to
uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for
progress in the larger world."
--Eleanor Roosevelt

Adjournment
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said: “There
isn’t going to be a First Lady.  There is just
plain ordinary Mrs. Roosevelt.  That’s all.”
But years later, the United Nations
proclaimed Eleanor Roosevelt the First Lady
of the World – the only person ever so
recognized.

Erma Stewart brings Eleanor Roosevelt to
audiences with humor, inspiration, and
insight.  An outstanding student of speech at
Southwest Missouri State University, Erma
was a West Point National Debater, as well
as a winning speaker and actress.  She
earned her Master of Arts in studies of
rhetoric at the University of Oklahoma.  She
has performed Readers Theatre, book
reviews, and other historical reenactments
and has often facilitated educational
workshops.  Her excellent research skills
and her speaking ability enable Erma
Stewart to present Eleanor Roosevelt that
has such audiences asking if she is
“channeling Eleanor.”

Mrs. Roosevelt, as portrayed by Erma
Stewart, speaks about her political activities;
her childhood, marriage, and role as First
Lady; her experience as an author and
lecturer; and her role as delegate to the first
United Nations.
