In Memoriam: Bhojraj Luchmun
UN Security Officer Served to
Bring Peace, Stability to Haiti

Members and friends of the Oklahoma City chapter
of the UN Association mourn the loss of Bhojraj
Luchmun, whose death in Haiti was confirmed on
January 30, 2010.
Mr. Luchmun, who was 45 years old, served as a field security
agent for MINUSTAH, the UN's peacekeeping mission to Haiti.
He is survived by his wife, Stenie Luchmun, a resident of
Bethany (OK), and their two children.
The lives of at least 70 other UN staffers were lost in the
January 12th earthquake, including the head of MINUSTAH, Mr.
Hedi Anabi. A complete list of UN staffers who were killed in
Haiti can be found HERE.
A native of Mauritius -- an island nation in the Indian Ocean --
Mr. Luchmun and his family moved to Bethany in 2008. Mrs.
Luchmun is a student at Southern Nazarene University.
Stenie Luchmun described her husband as a man of faith who
was proud of his professional work, including over 20 years of
experience in the military and police force in Mauritius.
"He was a devoted family man who rose early each morning to
say prayers," Mrs. Luchmun said. "I miss him very, very much."
She keeps a photograph of Mr. Luchmun, known to many as
"Sudesh," depicting her husband standing on the sidelines of a
soccer field in Bethany.
We cherish the memory of Mr. Luchmun as we remember the
losses sustained by the families of all peacekeepers from
around the world.

English translation
By Rod Sinclair (2004)
Faced by your enemies
On every hand
Battle is menacing,
Now make your stand
Fearful your question,
Defenceless, open
What shall I fight with?
Where is my weapon?
Here is your battle plan,
Here is your shield
Faith in this life of ours,
The common weal
For all our children's sake,
Save it, defend it,
Pay any price you must,
They shall not end it
Neat stacks of cannon shells,
Row upon row
Death to the life you love,
All that you know
War is contempt for life,
Peace is creation
Death's march is halted
By determination
We all deserve the world,
Harvest and seed
Hunger and poverty
Are born of greed
Don't turn your face away
From needs of others
Reach out a helping hand
To all your brothers
Here is our solemn vow,
From land to land
We will protect our world
From tyrants' hand
Defend the beautiful,
Gentle and innocent
Like any mother would
Care for her infant.
A Tribute to Fallen
Peacekeepers
When the UN Department of
Peacekeeping Operations was
awarded the Nobel Prize in 1988,
excerpts from a poem by Nordahl
Grieg were featured in the
presentation. Grieg, who died in
World War II, is recognized as a
fallen hero of the Norwegian people.
The title of the poem, "Til
Ungdommen," means "To the
Youth."
Til Ungdommen

In this music video, Kjersti Sofie Lovasdal Halvorsen sings the words to
Nordahl Grieg's poem, "Til Ungdommen," as translated into English by
Rod Sinclair. The music was composed by Otto Mortensen.

[BBC, 1-28-10] -- The United Nations held a memorial service in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, to remember dozens of its
workers killed in the earthquake. People hugged each other as a list of 85 confirmed UN fatalities was read out.
Former UN mission chief Edmond Mulet read a message from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. "To you I say: we are
with you in spirit. To those no longer with us I say: we will never forget you."
Mr Mulet told UN workers that "your efforts are the most sincere and eloquent memorial to those who gave their lives for
this mission."
Eloquent Memorial: "We will never forget you."
