Stop the Hate
Since 1998, the people of Oklahoma City have organized an annual “Celebrate Diversity –
Stop the Hate” event. The Greater Oklahoma City chapter of the United Nations
Association – USA is proud to be a supporter of this annual program.
Celebrate Diversity is Oklahoma’s part of the national “Stop the Hate” night. According to
the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, there were 9,726 hate crime incidences reported in 2001,
an increase of 19 percent from 2000. Several individuals and groups in Oklahoma were
targeted during that time, said Sharon Taylor Wilson, chairwoman for Celebrate Diversity.
“It is time for people to stand up to hate violence, to speak out when people are attacked
due to their race, religion, sexual orientations, nationality, gender or disability, and with a
united voice, say that ‘Enough is enough. We will not tolerate hate in our community,’”
Wilson said.
On October 21, 2004, at 7:30pm, a vigil to Celebrate Diversity and Stop the Hate was held
at St. Paul's Cathedral in Oklahoma City. This vigil was part of a national campaign
against hate violence.
This was a Call for People of Faith and Conscience to...
<> Act nonviolently as individuals for healing in our communities;
<> Oppose hate violence directed at anyone;
<> Raise a united voice for the loving spirit of inclusion and acceptance.
The 2004 "Celebrate Diversity" program featured noted musicians and speakers. Co-
presenters were Rev. Dr. Tom Boyd (emeritus professor of philosophy at OU) and Rev. Dr.
Barbara Boyd (religious studies faculty at OU). Excellent music was provided by Jahruba,
Mary Reynolds & Louise, Goldberg, and D. Ray Polk.
Co-sponsors of the Celebrate Diversity program were the Central Oklahoma Human
Rights Alliance, the Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City-County Health
Department Child Guidance Division, Metropolitan Ministries, and Mayflower
Congregational Church.
A wide range of other supporters and endorsers are behind the Celebrate Diversity event
in Oklahoma. They include numerous churches, temples, synagogues, charities,
community groups and other organizations.

On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations in 1985, this mosaic
was presented to the United Nations by Mrs. Nancy Reagan, the then First Lady, on
behalf of the United States.
It is based on a painting by the American artist Norman Rockwell called the Golden
Rule. Rockwell wanted to illustrate how the Golden Rule was a common theme of all
the major religions of the world, and depicted people of every race, creed and color
with dignity and respect. The mosaic contains the inscription "Do unto Others as You
Would Have Them Do unto You". It was executed by Venetian artists specializing in
mosaic works.
