Adopt-A-Minefield® is a program of the United
Nations Association of the USA, which engages
individuals, community groups, and businesses
in the United Nations effort to resolve the global
landmine crisis. The Campaign helps save lives
by raising funds for mine clearance and
survivor assistance and by raising awareness
about the landmine problem.
Globally, the Night of a Thousand Dinners has
been a resounding success, raising over $1
million globally for the Adopt-A-Minefield
Campaign. Dinners have been held in 27
countries around the world, from Afghanistan to
Sri Lanka, making this a truly international
event.
All of the proceeds from this event are used to
support Adopt-A-Minefield's mine clearance and
survivor assistance programs.
Antipersonnel landmines are still being laid today. These - and mines from
previous conflicts - continue to claim victims in every corner of the globe
each day. The situation has improved in recent years, but a global mine crisis
remains and there is still a lot to be done before we live in a mine-free world.

Each year since 2003, our chapter has raised
thousands of dollars for the Adopt-A-Minefield
program. Our major fundraising activity has
been our “Night of 1,000 Dinners” event, which
is organized by Rev. Bob Elliott and a group of
dedicated volunteers.
Our chapter’s 2006 “Night of 1,000 Dinners”
event was another great success – raising
nearly $1,200 for landmine clearance projects
sponsored by the UN Association’s Adopt-A-
Minefield program.
About 4 dozen of Oklahoma City’s most
glamorous glitterati attended the soiree,
including Ron Burkard, David & Betty Craighead,
Bob & Harriette Elliott, Fran Morris, Darla
Shelden, Randy Smith, and a galaxy of other
stars.
The March 9th event was hosted by St. Luke’s
United Methodist Church. Several attendees
walked away with door prizes, including Glenn
Norris. (No, he wasn’t the prize!).
Thanks to Dennis, Brian, and Meagan Elliott for
showing us how to clear a path to a safer
world. Thanks, as well, to Parker Cross and
Heather Mills McCartney for their contribution to
the video show. Most of all, thanks to Sara
Mae Gibson and Bob & Harriette Elliott for the
delicious meal.
Help us make our efforts even more successful
this year. Plan to attend our next fund-raiser in
Oklahoma City. Contact Rev. Elliott (via email)
to volunteer.
Let’s do it again in March, 2007!
People from around the world are participating in the
Adopt-A-Minefield program. This group of folks is from
Sri Lanka.
